Volcanology and Philosophy
Volcanology is an area of geology that involves the study of volcanoes, lava, eruptive processes, etc. Volcanologists conduct important work on legitimate scientific problems. Some of this labor requires their physical presence on and around volcanoes. Prudence dictates that these scientists wear protective gear and avoid the volcano during a violent eruption.
Similarly, one might argue, there are legitimate topics of philosophical study which, because of current eruptive cultural and political activity at their surface, philosophers cannot pursue responsibly without risking serious threats to their wellbeing. So, as the judicious volcanologist suspends study until the eruption is over, the savvy philosopher suspends (public) work on eruptive issues unless and until such investigation can be done properly without the threat of being seriously burned.
