The Ethics of Bodyweight
Peter Singer is a utilitarian. I’m skeptical of that normative theory, and there are adequate reasons for such skepticism. But I recognize the moral significance of the issue he conscientiously raises here.
The thinking displayed in his article is pluralistic. His argument is constructed in theoretically neutral terms, i.e., in a way that can be supported by non-utilitarian thinkers such as Kantians or virtue ethicists.
Should those who weigh more pay more? There are utilitarian, Kantian, and virtue theoretic reasons for an affirmative answer. What are the objections to these arguments?
