Coming of Age
It involves coming to understand that there are explanations for the good, bad, and neutral conditions in which one finds oneself and that we shouldn’t assume those conditions will continue forever. Why not? Because the explanations don’t contain sufficient reason for concluding perpetual continuity.
The young person tends to take his situations for granted; his lack of experience and youthful energy prevent him from comprehending the nuts and bolts of their accounts. The older one grasps those details and thus learns not to take things for granted.*
*My uses of “young” and “old” refer to mental and not biological growth; for many of us are familiar with folks who, despite advancement in years, have not yet come of (mental) age. Their stories are not bildungsroman.
