Aretē and Agōn
Would you rather be completely safe but fail to flourish as a human being, or flourish and be less than completely safe?
I’ll take the latter option. It’s better to flourish and yet not be completely protected from danger. Indeed, our flourishing might require that we face risks of various kinds.
To put the point aphoristically, using two Ancient Greek terms:
Aretē requires agōn.
