Amphibolous Language About Value
“Values vary from culture to culture” is an amphibology. On one hand, the sentence can be used to mean that valuing attitudes differ across cultures. On the other hand, it might mean that values themselves are relative to such attitudes. It is true that valuing attitudes vary in this way, but this is merely a descriptive fact of human sociology from which it does not follow that values themselves are relative to cultural attitudes.
