What’s the value of music?
For one thing, it has cathartic value, or so says Bob Marley in Trenchtown Rock.
“One good thing about music: when it hits, you feel no pain.”
Marley is in good company. His view is not far from Aristotle’s theory of catharsis, addressed here and here.
By the way, to say that some art is good for the sake of catharsis is not to say that art is only instrumentally valuable. Arguably, art is also intrinsically valuable.

I wish to learn more about the intrinsic value of art. Refer me to something you trust or if you are up to it, I would love to read an essay you will write about it.
