A Paradox of Human Life
In human affairs, Dionysian characteristics often fetter Apollonian ones, yet humans are by nature rational.
To resolve the paradox, one might claim that human beings are essentially rational in the sense of being capable of rationality, but it doesn’t follow that every human has developed a sufficient degree of rationality and self-control to prevent the emotions and desires from taking over the mind. Dionysian unruliness can dominate in the absence of reason properly cultivated.
